AT the February meeting, the president, Pat O'Reilly welcomed a well attended meeting, extending birthday greetings to those celebrating during the month.
The secretary reported that the December minutes had been available for perusal at the January birthday party which was held at Brightlingsea Sailing Club. An excellent meal was prepared and served by Beverley and Glynnis which was greatly enjoyed. The guests included the new lady deputy, Mrs Lesley Stone and visitors from the neighbouring institutes. They were entertained by Peter Reilly - magician, aided, abetted and perhaps confused by the members!
The president drew attention to items from Essex WI News: Food and fashion at Braintree, May 1; workshop at the WI centre for miniature dolls, April 4; county style day at Alresford village hall, April 23; dealing with deafness and Hearing Dogs for the Deaf at WI centre, May 16, and recommended books.
A letter of thanks was received from the lady deputy, Lesley Stone who had enjoyed the party and sending her best wishes to the institute. A letter thanking members for their generosity was also received from the forces in Pakistan who had been recipients of the shoebox parcels. The writer said the items were especially welcome as they were difficult to obtain in Kabul. A letter from George and Marian Mills was also received, who would welcome gifts of toilet rolls and toiletries for their next visit to Romania, and a collection was taken at the end of the evening for the purchase of these goods. The report and accounts from the 91st annual meeting was available for perusal.
The treasurer's reports for December and January showed a profit of £257.41 and a deficit of £461.74 respectively.
The speaker, Mrs Margaret Chubb, MBE was then introduced. Mrs Chubb, a local magistrate and a Citizens Advice Bureau official for some 36 years, now working from Harwich CAB and Colchester offices. She stated that although the CAB is a charity, she found the charity work more rewarding than a highly paid post. She went on to outline the work of the bureau, which has expanded to cover a wide variety of topics, from benefits, consumer and personal problems, form- filling, employment, to simple questions, reminding members that problems, no matter how trivial they may seem, are important to the person concerned, and all consultations are strictly confidential. The vote of thanks was given by the past president, Mrs Beryl Welch speaking for the members who had found the talk very interesting and informative.
The president drew attention to the exhibition organised by Brightlingsea town council to man a stall for WI information, at the Town Information Day tomorrow, and request four more helpers for the rota, which were noted.
The competition for the Spring Group meeting was for a handmade pin cushion and members were asked to submit their entries to the April meeting from which one would be selected to enter at the group meeting.
The meeting concluded with humorous readings given by Joan Harding.
The competition for Something My Mother Taught Me was won by Betty Buck, second Betty Clydesdale and third, Jessie Shipley.
The members were informed that the hire of the minibus which collected members had been increased and members agreed to pay an increased fare to cover the new cost.
The next meeting will take place on Thursday, March 6 at the community centre, when the speaker will be Barbara Faulkner and the competition: Decorate a Hat. New members and visitors always welcomed.
